The short version of the difference of an autoresponder service with an autoresponder program is that the program is a script that you purchase and install on your own hosting account, and the service is run by a 3rd party autoresponder company such as Aweber or Getresponse.

Making the right choice from the beginning is as crucial as deciding what foundation material you would use when building a skyscraper.  You wouldn't start building a castle on sand foundations, so why would you try to build a business messing with free autoresponders or scripts that run on your server, with low deliverability?

The  only advantage of running an autoresponder is the one time fee, since autoresponder services come with a monthly fee.  But believe me, it's worth every penny of it.

There are countless of marketers, who made the mistake of getting an autoresponder program running it from their own server.  In almost all the cases, these marketers have admitted that it was one of their biggest mistakes, and eventually switched to an autoresponder service, because their deliverability suffered, with their emails ending up in the bulk/junk folder. 

I would only run an autoresponder program on my server, only if I had customers that I could email and didn't have them optin to my Aweber account, and even then I would be prepared to lose those subscribers in the blink of an eye.

A single spam complaint, even if it's fake (spam complaint from someone who has signed up for your list) can shut down your website, your hosting account, and you could lose all your subscribers. 

Finally, it's hard to find an autoresponder service, which will allow you to import your subscribers from an autoresponder program, therefore it's important that you start building your list with them right from the beginning.

Thankfully, I did my research and started building my list with Aweber, without messing with any free services, which include ads in the messages, or any scripts running on my server with all the disadvantages I mentioned above.
